REMEDIATION OF THE FORMER KILKENNY GAS WORKS - CONTAMINATED LAND

Malone O’Regan were employed by McInerney Homes to provide environmental and engineering consultancy services to develop the former Kilkenny Gasworks. Given the site history, the development of this site presented a number of environmental challenges.

The first stage of the project included undertaking soil and groundwater investigations at the site. The results of these investigations were then used to undertake detailed qualitative and quantitative risk assessments to assess human health and environmental risks associated with any contaminants detected. As part of the risk assessment process, site specific remedial target values were developed for the site that met with the approval of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Prior to any remediation works commencing at the site, Malone O’Regan prepared a detailed Remediation Plan and an Environmental Management Plan that was submitted to Kilkenny County Council for approval. These plans addressed issues such as health and safety, traffic management, occupational and environmental monitoring, consultation procedures with local residents and management of nuisances such as odours and dust.

Malone O’Regan managed the implementation of the remediation works that comprised the export and disposal of significant quantities of contaminated soils and waters as well as the removal, containerisation and export of tars. Following the completion of the site works a groundwater validation monitoring programme was implemented to validate that the works had been successfully completed in accordance with the requirements of the approved remedial strategy.

All works were completed to the satisfaction of the both the EPA and the Local Authority.
