Malone O’Regan was retained by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann as civil and structural engineering and environmental consultants for Traditional Arts Centre which has been developed to act as a regional resource centre for the promotion and development of the traditional arts. The new centre provides facilities for performance and teaching, rehearsal, recreation and research The main space of the 320 seat theatre is designed as four pivoting, stepped segments to make it a more informal and dynamic space and allow sub-division for smaller performances.
The building provides for a reception, bar and lounge, stage (theatre), workshops, recording studio, practice rooms, dressing rooms, classrooms, offices and kitchen. The site provides for paved walkways, outdoor performance area tarmac car parks.
The remediation of contaminated land and design of foundations and underground services were major considerations as the building is sited on an old municipal dump. Malone O’Regan designed a gas venting system for below the ground floor slab and assessed all spoil for contamination. Building foundations are piled and underground services were supported using geotextiles.
