Monaghan Courthouse
Monaghan Courthouse, a detached, five-bay, two-storey over basement structure, was designed by Joseph Welland and built of stone from a local mountain quarry c.1830. The central block has a three-bay portico with two Greek Doric columns in antis and a coat of arms in the pediment.
Malone O’Regan were retained for the renovation and upgrading the courthouse to provide additional accommodation for the legal profession; additional prisoner holding cells; improving accessibility for all including the installation of lifts; upgrade of services and drainage; and the reversal of a number of interventions which were made following a fire in the 1980’s including the removal and replacement of the main staircase.
The project won the Best Public Building Project at the prestigious 2011 CMG Building Design Awards.
